   Scholarship Information

All potential scholarship recipients must have submitted Scholar Dollar application as a pre-requisite to consideration for a departmental scholarship.

Department of Languages and Linguistics Scholarship ($500)

The Department of Languages and Linguistics awards a partial scholarship to students with a major or minor in Languages or Linguistics.

Criteria for Application:

  • Must be a Junior or Senior with cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better with a major or minor in the Department of Languages and Linguistics

Application procedure:

  • A one-page single-spaced letter stating why you should be considered and for which scholarship you are applying.
  • A written letter of recommendation from a professor or instructor in the Department of Languages and Linguistics

 

Carl A. Tyre Memorial Spanish and Literature Award ($500)

This scholarship was established in memory of Dr. Carl A. Tyre, an eminent scholar and language professor. He was Head of the Department of Foreign Languages at NMSU from 1935 to 1958, and member of the faculty until 1965. In his honor, his wife, Mrs. Carl A. Tyre and friends established the award for the best all-around Spanish in his/her Senior year.

Criteria for Application:

  • Must be a graduating Senior by May 2016, meaning you will be a senior at the beginning of the Fall 2015 semester.
  • Majoring in Spanish

Application procedure:

  • A one-page single-spaced letter stating why you should be considered and for which scholarship you are applying for.

 

The Ralph and Amelia Montes Skaggs Experiential Learning Scholarship

Criteria for Application:

  • Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better
  • Financial need as determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarship Services
  • Must have a declared major in the Department of Languages and Linguistics
  • Must be enrolled full-time at NMSU-Las Cruces Campus.

Application procedure:

  • A one-page single-spaced letter stating why you should be considered for the Skaggs scholarship.

 

Fabián  and Virginia Samaniego Memorial Endowed Scholarship (One or More Totaling $3500)

The exact amount and number of the awards given each year to be determined by the Department of Languages Scholarship Committee.

Criteria for Application:

  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better
  • Financial need as determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarship Services
  • Applicant must be an undergraduate Hispanic student with a declared major in Spanish

Application procedure:

  • A one-page single-spaced letter stating why you should be considered for the Samaniego scholarship.

   

Ricardo Aguilar Memorial Endowed Scholarship

The exact amount and number of the awards given each year to be determined by the Department of Languages Scholarship Committee.  The scholarship is to either fund student research or conference travel to present a paper.

Criteria for Application:

  • Must be a graduate student in the Master of Spanish in Spanish

Application procedure:

  • Applicants must submit a 1-2 page proposal specifying how the funds will be used.  A detailed budget is required.
