Linguistics examines the complexity of human language. Linguists look at language as a set of systems of sound, words, and word structures and also from the perspective of how we as humans use language to communicate our knowledge, beliefs, and cultural values. The study of linguistics fosters a careful and considered examination of language, self, and others, and builds a strong foundation of critical thinking and world knowledge.
Linguists work as analysts, language engineers, speech scientists, communications managers, data scientists, annotators, public relations managers, or copywriters and editors. They help create devices that will execute commands, effectively develop and target online ads, provide translation and interpretation, analyze user experiences (UX) with a product or service, identify threats to national security and research miscommunication to avoid accidents in everyday situations.
